Inspired by a mix of stories different trans-boys have told me.

Nothing is more important than supportive parents. Mind you, it's probably ten times easier for Niels because he never knew Magnus as a girl, so he didn't have to mentally change his idea of Magnus from "My daughter" to "My son".

EDIT: I had hoped I didn't have to explain it, but the point is that Niels screwed up the size, but because he gave Magnus a gift that show he support him, Magnus still prefer it over all the other gifts even though he can't really use it.

Honestly just having people that give you generic girly stuff when you're not trans but not girly is really annoying and shows they don't really like you.

I totally agree! although sometimes it's not that they don't really like you, it's more like they have no idea what to get you . . . at least for me it's like that.

my family and friends have long since learned, when in doubt, get a gift card for a bookshop.

I personally think gift cards are also rather lame, but at least they know not to buy me one for make up!

Yeah, that's true. A personalized gift card is infinitely better than a gift that is completely inappropriate to my likes and interests. I have a brother who is eerily good at buying me gifts and a brother who just resorts to gift cards and a sister who makes all of her Christmas presents and buys me things that I don't necessarily want but always end up loving. My parents work at Nintendo so they just buy me video games because it's cheap for them.

Who bases their gift purchases on gender? Can't say I've bought many presents, but don't you try to focus on what they'd actually LIKE? so confusing.

There's nothing confusing about it. It makes sense to most people because people think that gender dictates taste, to a certain extent. They think along the lines of 'girls like jewellery and clothes', 'boys like video games'. If they don't know a person well, they'll think something like 'well I'll get her a necklace, girls like necklaces'.
