Today we think of unicorns as beautiful gentle creatures, but you'd be surprised by how violent they were in older stories. Norwegians unicorns were even believed to eat humans, and there are stories about people feeding them bears and bulls to keep from getting eaten themselves.

How on Earth did anyone come up with the idea of a horse with a horn eating meat? Although I suppose the Norwegian version could have been based on Narwhals as opposed to the Greek version which is most likely based on either rhinos or antelope, which can be violent when protecting their herd I suppose but of course would still be plant eaters, whereas narwhals have teeth and eat fish and squid much like sperm whales so would be thought of as meat eaters I guess, then again the Greeks thought that a half-bull-half-man would eat people despite cows being herbivores, so who knows. I just think of a unicorn as a horse with a bloody great horn, myself, and bloody-great horns are generally used for charging things, so best not to mess with them even if they are only plant eaters, same goes for rhinos.
