Good Hair by humon Good Hair by humon
"Good hair" usually means "straight hair", I know. But dammit, I love curly afro hair.

I know, I know, as a white woman I should shut my big mouth because natural afro hair is a bitch to work with, but I've felt like that ever since I was a child and watched a children's show called "Bullerfnis" [link] and I though the woman was the most beautiful thing ever, hair included.

Than a few years later her and her friend appeared in a children's movie as two cops, and she wore a straight wig [link] and I was all "Why did they make her less pretty? :C"
Only many years later did I realize that they made her more of a stereotypical tough black chick, and him a stereotypical whimpy white guy who was in love with her. :XD:

I'm part African American (Though you can't tell by my skin tone, haha) and I'm so happy to find someone that thinks curly hair is downright beautiful.

I wish there were more drawing references for African American women hair :(

We live in a society that only deems something white as "perfect" and "beautiful".

Anything with color is seen as "ugly" and "demented".

I love this! I hate how people always classify as good hair as "straight hair"
I'm black and I love my curly thick hair! For about 10 months I've been growing out my hair
by wearing dreadlocks! It's the best thing I've done for my hair and it's healthier than ever before!
I love how this kills stereotyping (:

I'm white but my hair is almost like afro hair. My classmates are always teasing me because of it. But I also like curly hair and dread locks =)

Love this! I've been natural for 6 years and yes afro hair can be a pain especially because I have kinky-coily and wavy hair. I have had just about every natural hairstyle drawn in this excellent representation of "good hair". Im def faving this! :)

I'm proud of my curly hair and I love the afro style! My coutry is so mixed, but even the girls with natural curly hair don't like them :c It's make me sad. It's funny have curly hair. You can make the most beautiful styles.

I teach and like to incorporate as much art as possible into my classroom. I don't have an art background and rely a lot of kind people to post ideas for me online. I can find tons of tutorials on how to draw straight hair and a few on hair with "Goldilocks" curls, but it's almost impossible to find cartoon examples of hair with those lovely tight curls. Thank you so much!!!

Thank you so much for putting this up. I'm half black and live in a predominantly white community. As a child I was always ashamed of my natural hair (I even cried when people would see me without my fake pony-tail in). Now, though, I'm planning on growing my hair out and wearing it naturally,( because weave is extremely annoying to take out and itchy as heck!).

i wish i could go natural with my hair but it gets so wild that i break too many combs when it gets dry and then if its wet it stays wet for hours Q~Q its like a 4-5 hour job to keep it from going crazy orz. but i wish i could some day.

Fuck off. She's just saying what BLACK WOMEN THEMSELVES say. Many black moms hate their daughters' hair and complain about brushing them, thus giving the children complexes.

So, yeah, she doesn't have to be a hairstylist to echo what some black women feel. Damn it, you're making a big deal out of nothing...

As a black women, I appreciate this. I feel self-conscious about going natural precisely because there aren't enough people in the world like you. Whenever I see Esperanza Spalding I just flip out because she is beautiful like that.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be black so I could have an afro. I'm a redhead with a pair of redheaded parents! They thought I was strange. Haha. It's still my favorite hairstyle for a woman! Please go natural, it's lovely.

I'm about to get rid of the Permanent Chemical Straightener and rock what ever natural kinks/curls/coils i was born with. All my non-black friends (except 1 and some of my family) think it's amazing and that i should do it. But all my black friends just think i'm silly for doing it and think it's a bad idea. Like the "If it aint broke don't fix it" saying. It makes me kinda sad really that someone would want somebody they care about to put damaging and harmful chemicals on their body... It's a different story if they want it but if i said i don't want to dip my head in acid anymore because it doesn't make me happy, why are these so called friends making me feel bad about it? :C My own people at that....

I know how you feel. I've stopped using relaxers for nearly two years though I still have relaxed ends(but I do have some support from both blacks and non-blacks). You shouldn't feel that way though. There's a lot of natural hair communities online to get support from;I have a few links if you want. If you want we can exchange tips about natural hair. :)

I looked at your profile and it says your in the Bahamas. I believe that plays in the lack of support you are getting. My background is Jamaican and I've had encounters of people being shocked about not using relaxers when I go there(ie. had a cousin whose a hairstylist who almost crapped themselves when I told them I stopped.). :XD: Not sure in the Bahamas but there's a lot of products in America/Canada that carter to transitioning/natural hair.

Wow, sorry for the long winded comment.

Haha wow this is long! It's alright though, i appreciate your input :)
I'd love to have some links and exchange some tips on Natural hair, lately i've been having a lot of doubts about going through with it or how to take care of the new growth that i have but i know I've gone too far to turn back. i have to at least try or i'll never kick this curiosity of what it would be like to go natural :P I currently live in Canada for school and i personalty feel like i'd find more products for "black hair" at home but idk yet :P
