Kiwi Bird by humon Kiwi Bird by humon
I'm done with all the art for the book! [link]

But I made one drawing too many so you get the kiwi now instead. :D

You gotta' love how it's the male who has to incubate it. It's like the female is saying, "I'm done with that shit! You do the rest! I'm off!" :XD:

Kiwi are my favorite. I don't know why. I mean there are kickin birds like hawks or birds of paradise. But I just love the kiwi.

Wow, when my sister said a kiwi bird i just imagined a kiwi with wings O.o
ANYWAYS that must be very painful...

Technically, kiwi do have wings, but they're so small and underdeveloped that although they exist, they are of absolutely no use.

Typical New Zealand birds though, so many of our birds either can't fly well or fly at all. The kiwi is definitely our crowning glory though :3

Still at home, still huge. It's a boy, and it really could be any day now (or ouch, any hour) and I'd stress a lot less if my hubby would get that darn crib assembled.

Gotta love how the male is just staring at he belly in slight confusion. You can bet he's wondering how he's supposed to incubate that thing

What sort of evolutionary advantage, I wonder, does having such a life-threatening birth method have?
Reply
:iconthediremoose:
thediremoose Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2013
Just my thoughts:

Kiwis are smaller relatives of giant birds like emus and ostriches. They may have evolved a smaller size because a) no predators, so giant size isn't necessary and b) less food needed per bird.

Evolution isn't a perfect system, though, and they still had to deal with an egg intended for a much larger ancestral bird.

The babies are less defenseless upon hatching??

:iconomny87:

I suppose that's true, yes... but at the same time, don't most flightless birds evolve that way due to a lack of local predators negating the need to fly and nest up in trees?
