Manga Backgrounds by humon Manga Backgrounds by humon
While I stayed at Charlie's place he showed me his manga collection. One of them had beautifully drawn people, but most of the time there were no backgrounds, and when there were, it was obviously photos that had been played around with.

So I though it would be fun to try and make photos look like manga backgrounds. What do you think? Iíll try and make one with characters in next time.

Oh, and a SatW comic will be up later today.

is it posible to draw something like this? what i actually i mean is, do mangakas like takeshi obata who draw so realistic mangas draw their surroundings or whan happens? im still very new to manga and im trying to learn... great work btw
OnDeDraw Featured By Owner May 12, 2012  Hobbyist
though this might be a late reply :P
Yes, it is actually lol. I used to wonder the same thing. But now, having some knowledge in architecture as it's what I'm studying, backgrounds are so simple. It's a matter of applying perspective: 1 point, 2 point, 3 point. In fact, backgrounds are much, much easier to draw than humans in perspective. The reason being that humans have so many irregular shapes: odd curves and such, whilst buildings are static and blocky: rectangular, cubic, etc. Of course the amount of detail you add to the background can take up time. Mangakas like Obata however, probbaly will have assistants who specialise in backgrounds/screentoning. This doesn't mean he doesn't know how to draw backgrounds (A veteran like obata will most certainly do), it's just that having to draw a chapter per week will require assistance so whilst he's focusing on the characters his assistants may work on the backgrounds :P
alejandrothefader Featured By Owner Jun 2, 2013
so all the backgrounds i see in those mangas are done by hand
can you please tell me where to find screentone, and if i can't what alternatives are there to it? like watercolour or pencil? any techniques to mimic screentoning
Loaznkicker4444 Featured By Owner Nov 10, 2011  Student Traditional Artist
of course its possible to draw that. manga is limitless\ =D
alejandrothefader Featured By Owner Jun 2, 2013
yeah, it is! but what i meant is, i can draw realistic backgrownds, but it takes TIME
no shortcuts then? :/

As far as manga goes:

The BEST architecture I've ever seen in a its genre (harem comedy/magical girl with minor horror elements?) and definitely one of the better architecture I've seen in manga in general. The character art is mediocre, the story is so-so, but good god Kaishaku can do some architecture and it's CONSISTENT, which is a nice departure from the average 'okay, I need to feature this building that we probably will never see again and I'm going to draw it amazingly and fuck all those regular buildings THEY CAN BE BLAND'. I wish I could find a picture. I particularly like the title pages for chapters 4, 9, 11.
Bumbiddy Featured By Owner May 31, 2011
Same thing I see with X/1999 and Tokyo Babylon.
It doesn't bother me because the character art mainly makes up for everything else.

Briliant idea, I'll see if I can give you some good background pictures to play with.
mzclark Featured By Owner Apr 30, 2011  Hobbyist Interface Designer
well i dont blame him for photoshoping photos. i'd do it too but only for reference in finaling the scene however that's a style that i could get used to (as long as the photos belong to that artist)

i like the way these came out. the skyline is great. looks believable! The one with the houses almost looks perfect. The cars have too much black(however it could be translated as the artists own style).
Queenz14 Featured By Owner Apr 20, 2011  Student Traditional Artist
I do this too ! But I`m still working on it, how you put them all together like that ?

very neat, I'd like to use this to save the pain of drawing backgrounds. What program did you used?
SeeNuanRun Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2011
The first two seem perfect, but the one w/ the cars... I think it might seem off because drawn cars wouldn't... have as much detail? :crying: I don't know! There's just something really off about those autos, yo :shakefist: Otherwise, 's all loverly.
