The next comic [link]

When I went to England I noticed that people would apologize or even freak out if they as much as touched my little finger. At first I thought that maybe I was putting people off, but later it was explained to me that English people are just incredibly nervous about touching people they don't know very well.

I've been to conventions in quite a few countries by now, and England is the only country where most people asked for a handshake rather than a hug. :XD:

I've recently found out that I have a problem with apologizing, I mean I did a team building activity and part of it meant that if you touched the ground you'd have to run to the building and back. Each time I apologized, even knowing that it wasn't my fault and it was a team thing, well at the end the guy running it told me this after and the first thing that came to mind to say was "Sorry, I don't mean to apologize, it just a habit."
Also I, myself, like the idea of hugs but generally don't hug. I even get a bit weird about my siblings hugging me, yet I still love the idea of being hugged.
I guess I'm just to English

As a Brit this is very true, though I'm Half Canadian so I'm still quite huggy.

Yeah, my Grandma still prefers a handshake rather than a hug. We had an american move in nearby and I gotta admit when she came at me arms wide for a good old squeeze I nearly bolted
brancorvo Featured By Owner Mar 4, 2014
Interesting indeed, I did not know they are that way. Have they been all there History, or from since 1900 for instance, or maybe it's more like a new thing for XXI?
Can be like the Beatles, something all world  will follow in some point?? lol

it's true we're a little(a lot) weird about that, but it's because we find it a little awkward when it comes to that.

In America its not verry touchy unless you are like a really open person. I stoped hugging dudes a long time ago. I only hug small children or my very best girlfriends. Idon't think I even hugged my boyfriends that offten when we where dateing.

wow, that is SO different from where I live (louisiana). here, when you first meet anybody, its a hug first. unless, of course, its like a boss or something...

Welllllll! In Norway it's the other way around. Even if they bump into people or step on their feet, they don't bother to apologize or even look at them.
Ankfly Featured By Owner Nov 23, 2012
Hmm... How do these people get along in the underground then?
arcticfoxxy Featured By Owner Nov 10, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
In America, it is considered very rude to bump into or touch someone we don't know. ^^
A part of it may be that we think the other person may think we are trying to sexually harass or pickpocket them, somehow, as well~...
It is uncommon to hug someone you don't trust or know enough to trust, but it really depends on the person, the stereotypical American would be very open and friendly, but that's not really the case. :D;;

I'm Scottish and all, but I have a holiday house near London in case I get any work there, I've been there a few times and I gotta admit this is true ^^

Knowing me I walk through crowds without a care in the world, but English people make a big thing of getting out of each others way, I must have gotten about ten apologies simply getting from the train station to the nearest cafe last time I visited xD I have heard that there are a few pick pockets around London though, so I guess they apologize in case they think you think they robbed you... if that makes any sense at all ^^"

I imagine England and Japan would get along very well because of their similar conceptions of personal space. I was in Japan for a little over two months this summer, and I can probably count the number of times that I shook hands on one hand (I also don't think I actually hugged anyone outside of my host family). Never would have guessed that British people were very similar in that regard!
Great job, another brilliant comic.

well I'm english and I'm a very huggy person aha, most of us aren't that uptight
FallenQuills Featured By Owner Oct 19, 2012
We are paranoid. I think that one day we might just start bowing to each other like in Japan. It's the same on buses; When it's really full, there's like a contest to see who will dare to sit next to a stranger first. People actually prefer to stand than sit next to someone they don't know. XD

So true! I'm british so I'm used to all this lack of physical contact but when I went to france recently I was pretty shocked by all the hugs and kisses there.

We do that too. But only with a man and a woman...and two girls. Men give a sturdy handshake. XD
Prailin Featured By Owner Sep 14, 2012
Yeah men think it's too gayish to kiss another man, though it can be if it's your lil son or grandson
kayanne21 Featured By Owner Sep 14, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Nope. No kissing other guys. Any guy. Doesn't matter who it is. Least that's what it's like in my family. Is that normal.

I used to be like that lol. My friends ending up taking turns hugging me to try and get me used to physical contact. Now they say I have no concept of personal space -_-...

LittleBayPony98 Featured By Owner Jun 5, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Huh, I never noticed that before, but it's pretty true. I've been in my fair share of crowded cities and shopping centers and 'sorry' has to be the phrase that is the most given and received.

I just thought it was the same in every country, if one brushes past someone, they apologise. That's how I've been brought up.
