I've been looking and maybe I just suck at it, but I'm curious: how did Odin and Hymer have a child? Is it like Athena's "birth" or did one of them become a woman or something? I saw a reference that Odin has trans characteristics, so did Odin bear the baby? Or was it an adoption? I don't mean any offense by this. I just like learning about mythology.

That is a REALLY convoluted question, as the "Tyr is Odin's son" thing is very disputed in and of itself. The lore is very solid on certain things and very fuzzy in others...other stories state that Tyr predates Odin. So, it's possible that both Odin and Hymer were considered his father at different times...it's a strange sort of thing.

Odin having trans characteristics I call bunk on though. It is very well known that Odin was well versed in Seidr magic, which is a form of magic that is considered unmanly. A woman's craft, essentially. Odin learned it because it was a very powerful and useful type of magic, that gave him more knowledge. I don't think that is enough to call Odin trans. It'd be like a man knowing how to sew or crochet during times when that was considered very unmanly. Maybe made fun of, but not enough to call someone trans.

Cool! I wasn't calling him trans because of what he could do (like "oh he can sew, he must be feminine"). I just saw the reference on one of the sites I visited (like literally "he had trans characteristics" or something) and figured it might be like the Loki story where Loki turned into a female horse and gave birth to Sleipnir or maybe like Nightcrawler's original origin where Mystique turns into a male so Oracle can given birth to Nightcrawler from her union with Mystique or he's a hermaphrodite or something. Probably should have read more into that. My fault.

No, I figured that's what you were saying. While Loki does become a female in order to birth Sleipnir (and he actually has other instances of transforming into a woman), Odin doesn't. I have read the same people who have suggested that Odin had trans characteristics. They are referencing the Seidr magic. That's literally the only thing. He never has done any shapeshifting into a woman like Loki does. I have read those same websites, and they are reading too much into that one thing.

Honestly, I don't think that the concept of "trans" as we know it would even make sense in a Norse setting. Even Loki, I wouldn't call trans, although he does shapeshift into a woman (he'd definitely be a god who would be very pro-transgendered people, but he himself would sort of be beyond those concepts). Gender disparity wasn't really a thing that I think the Norse really thought about, so trying to push modern concepts like that onto them doesn't really make a lot of sense. Their general concept of gender was just too different from ours. Heck, I'd argue that they really didn't have a concept of gender as we do. If tried to explain what a trans person was to a Norseman, he'd probably be confused. Not because of ignorance but because he wouldn't understand why we'd make such a big deal out of it.

To be fair, I think in Norse mythology (unlike Greek) most of these "affairs" are less about a self-entitled guy getting some on the side, and more about careful planning. Odin's union with Jord (I'm not sure why they just said Earth here, as Jord is her name in Norse myth) to create Thor was never mentioned as being something that gave Frigga any grief, and it would seem that it was more about creating Thor specifically, since he was needed and necessary.

Odin's a planner and a schemer. Everything is calculated with him.

At least all of Odin's affairs were most likely CONSENSUAL.  Some of Zeus's "affairs" were straight up RAPES.

Haha, they might not be quite a convoluted as the Greek Gods (I blame Zeus) but still a lot of family ties.  I really do need to remember to do more research on Norse Mythology. I know Greek and Egyptian pretty well, time to add another. ^.^

Thank you very much for the family trees. ^.^

Some sources claim Odin to be the father of Ull, which means Ull is both stepson and stepbrother of Thor. Yeah, pretty messed up, I know.

Is Tyr the son of Odin? I thought he was adopted/had chosen to be one of the Asir. Granted most onformation about his family I've gained through the Valhall comic so I could be out fishing.

Also, how was Brage born? If he's the son of just Odin, I mean.

PS. Älskar allt du gör! Mange tak från Sverige :)
