Races 01by *humon

Traditional Art / Drawings / Fantasy

Lately I’ve been having fun with making a fantasy world inhabited by races which biology and social structures are inspired by various animals and with names taken from Latin. For example, there is of course a city dwelling race inspired by ants called Enopteras.

Here are some of the races that really screw up the gender roles as we usually think of them.
From top left to bottom right.

Pholcus
Polcus’ look scary, but are harmless. The men build houses in the trees that are equipped with small holes in the walls. When the house is done, passing women will ask to see the place. They knock on the wall, stamp on the floor and test the holes to makes sure it won’t suddenly collapse. If they find the place suitable, they will mate with the man, and stay for as long as they’re pregnant. When the child is born they leave, leaving the child in the man’s care. During the pregnancy he has spend the time making a small nest in one of the holes, and here he gently palace the child. If his house is well build all the holes will soon have a baby in it. Now his main job is to keep predators away and make sure the children aren’t too hot or cold. When they’re old enough they will crawl out of the holes themselves.

Pocampus
A very peaceful race. They’re vegetarian and live near and in the water. Here it is the men who get pregnant. The women are even equipped with something that look like a penis which she use to insert her egg into the man.

Avosetts
Avosetts have completely turned the usual gender roles upside-down. Her the women are bigger and stronger than the men, and fight each other for territory and mates. Avosette women usually have a harem of two or more men, who take care of the home and raising the children. It’s a common joke among avosette men that women have no idea how to handle children, and they are usually right.

Yennes
Are related to avosetts and have similarly reversed gender roles, but the yennes have taken it to the extreme. The yenne women are often mistaken for men, are feared by almost all other races, and unlike the avosetts who are caring and loving towards their men, the yennes almost see it as a sport to abuse theirs. The men in turn take out their frustrations on each other and other races. One would think they would rape the more weak women of other races, but surprisingly it have never happened. It is because for them sex is when a woman punch them in the face and then force themselves on them, so the thought of raping a women seem strange to them.
The race is overall extremely violent and aggressive and have no allies.

So...if the woman has a penis and the men get pregnant, the thing that must determine the two is which one has the eggs and which one has semen...Interesting.

since they're related i assume avosetts and yennes could interbreed... or at least try
so what would happen if a male yennes came accross a female avosetts?
considering how similar the females are physically i feel like the yenneswouldn't try to start trouble with her but i bet her gental attitude towards him would confuse him pretty bad

Wow..this is really interesting and inspiring!

D I really like how you've made these races. o_o I my self have tried to make one race for almost 6 years now. >_< Still seems that they arent even close to this level of...damn..loss of words 'cause of awesomeness. o_o

I'm not sure if you know this, but some of the traits described in your creatures are very common ones among animals. For example, in most species, the female is larger.
