The big shame by humon The big shame by humon
The next comic [link]

I spend the weekend with a pair of girls from the Faroe Islands and we ended up talking about the whale killings and this "article" [link]

It basically gets everything wrong. They don't use hooks, but knifes and axes. It looks bloody, but that's because it's in the sea.

I'm neither for or against it, but I know it will turn into a massive discussion in the comments, so try to keep it civil.

Norway: What's-
Sweden:Just ignore them it'll be fine
Norway: But-
Sweden: Ssssssshhhhhh just walk away
I've never understood why people oppose the Faroese whaling because most people who criticise the Faroe Islands and other whaling countries eat meat and fish which is usually the result of industrial farming, unless you are a vegetarian or a vegan, like me, then critiquing the Faroese for hunting whales is just stupid as you yourself are eating an animal that has been killed for you to eat.

three words, Humon.

Japanese whaling industry.

Faroe isn't japan and just because their both killing whales also doesn't make it the same, the faroes are a small collection of islands roughly jalf way between scotland and greenland (Not exact) with a population of 50'000 hunting whales because they have difficulty farming on their land so rely on the sea for food.

Japan is very large agricultraly developed land with a population of 120'000'000 plus people who have created whole industry dedicated to whaling.

the main difference, no one in japan will starve if they stop hunting whales.
According to my research.

Oh god... this is disgusting... *sigh* as much as I like your comics this is honestly disturbing. Yes of course that 'article' has got basically all the facts wrong but people are really screwed up sometimes.

Problem being whale & dolphin meat contains high levels of mercury, tests have shown that those who consume whale meat have gotten mercury poisoning and they usually come with horrific results. Culture or not, I just don't see the logic in killing and eating something that inevitably kills you.

By the way, Denmark isn't the only one who does this, Japan's famous for it. Remember Sea Shepherd and their quest to stop the whalers? And remember the movie 'The Cove' where they slaughter dolphins?
QuinzyCobweb Featured By Owner Mar 11, 2012  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
If its part of their culture and they understand and can control the effect the killing has on the ecosystem and as long as they do it as quickly and humanly as possible I don't see a problem. I mean it's not for sport right? they make use of the meat and blubber, so its just a way of life.

And of course the sea is turn red. Those whales are pretty big so they naturally have a lot of blood in them.
54viruses Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2012
If they're not endangered and the killing is done quickly and humanely; have at it I say.

I don't care how smart something is, if it tastes good I'll eat it. People have to kill animals to eat and survive, its the basic law of survival. But it should be done as humanly as possible, which doesn't always happen. As for the article that is actually an email, someone has seen those shocking pictures and not known anything about it all and got mad over what they thought was going on. Truth is just blood in the water, it spreads so thin on the internet it looks like its everywhere when there's actually only a small bit.
If you've seen a video on this same topic, it's probably just a repeat of the artice by a fellow small minded hot head. A big tip off to whether a good source on this is whether they call them dolphins (incorrect) or whales (correct!). And Yes obesity is a big problem, but not in every country. The people on these small isolated islands don't have the means to overeat, they have to rely on the old fasioned way of getting food, killing it yourself! Thats how we all got here, if our ancestors had took the stand of "It's too cute, fuzzy, and smart to kill even though I'm starving too death!" the human race would have died out. And then we wouldn't be able to share our differing opinions with each other.

"I don't care how smart something is, if it tastes good I'll eat it." By that logic, it`s okay to eat people. The desire to eat doesn`t justify eating EVERYTHING.

Domestic animals, bread and raised for eating - ok.
Wildlife - not ok.

My two cents.
Windestaenzerin Featured By Owner Jun 5, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
So you're also against eating fish? Because most kinds of fish are not bred and raised for eating...
Nifty-D Featured By Owner Jun 15, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
I do not agree with capturing from oceans and seas, yes.
As long as they eat 'em and stay relatively humane about it, what's the problem? Who are we to command a people how to live their lives for the sake of a few whales?
Dragimal Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Ah, the beauty of selective compassion. Aren't we humans the most adorable hypocrites?
rosalia-chan Featured By Owner Feb 18, 2012
I have no problem with whalling. People dont realise that all the blood they see is dilluted in the water, so it spreads out more. Like when humans spit out blood, it looks like there's so much more blood than there actually is. They live out in the middle of the ocean. What else are they supposed to eat, seaweed? That's not exactly enough nourishement for the entire population. People freak out over stuff they don't understand and try to make it a good-versus-evil thing. The whole situation is just about some people getting food. It's just the law of nature; living things die to feed other living things.
purpletiger Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2012
I have no problem with whaling as long as it's for the purpose of actually using what you get from it, and not on a "OMG MASS SLAUGHTER!!!11~!" scale.

On topic, I don't know which of the last two panels I laughed harder at xD
ravengurl11 Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
I'm not exactly pro whaling. But I think eating pork is a much bigger problem actually.
I thought an adult pig was as smart as a three year old child? read it somewhere, might be wrong of course. But that would make them significantly smarter than dogs =w=
MenollySagittaria Featured By Owner Feb 13, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist

They do use hooks (though that rather recent). I watched an entire ten minute video put together and those were bloody NASTY hooks and it is practically torture with those sea mammals flapping away and dying far too slowly as they hack away. The other half of the video was older with the people actually using knives and axes, but still too slow to be humane.
Their reason: Tradition! Food!
Those dolphins are toxic. According to recent data there is TOO much food and people are getting fat (though no where near the rate Americans get to-certainly higher than the past). Tradition?
It was also tradition to stuff women in houses, behead them, torture them, and treat them as terribly as what they do to those dolphins.
It just looks bloody because it's water is a terrible excuse. Water dilutes. It was so damn red that I was wondering how that whale still flapping was still alive with a gigantic hole with organs spilling out.
Though I was rather confused when they kept saying Denmark...then I realized the faroe islands is Denmark's overgrown child that takes care of itself....
So Tradition can stuff itself. We are a species of nearly 7 billion (6,994,187,004) and we're basing the killings on percentages? That's fantastic! So Let's say there were only 50 of a certain species left. And you killed ten of them... That's only 1/5- only 20%... that leaves only 40 of those things left. What good is percentage if it doesn't tell you that they are dying at an increasing rate while killing the entire population of New York is even less the 1% of our population....
There's a reason why I can never condone the painful killings of those dolphins and it is more shameful to try and defend massive slaughter like that when it isn't even necessary. If we do that then we should condone killing at least 50% of every continent and island of humans.

That reminds me a lot of the seal hunt here in Canada. A lot of animal rights groups have been loudly condemning it in the past few years, countries talking about bans on Canadian seal products, outdated footage of people brutally killing seals circulating on the internet, etc. I live somewhere with an active seal hunt, and if you do your research you'll find the hunt is much more humane in many cases than a lot of those large scale slaughter houses, and the hunters aren't nearly the heartless monsters they're made out to be. People tend to assume, for example, that clubbing a seal is a horribly cruel practice, while in actual fact if it's preformed with the right tools by someone who knows who they're doing (as it is with the vast majority of hunters) it's an instant death for the seal. It's a matter of actually looking into the practices, which unfortunately many celebs or organizations looking for a cause to boost their public appeal don't do.

I love Faroe's expressions xD
And his arguements make a lot of sense.
It makes me sad to think they kill whales, but who am I to talk, my own country (Norway) kills both seals and whale... But according to the government's website, we keep a restrictive policy on how many we can kill so they don't become extinct or anything. But still :(
If I sat down to think about all the meat I eat during a month... killing other kinds of animals is just as bad.
I should become a vegetarian.

I see both sides actually. They do it for food, not fun, and try not to make the animals suffer. Farm animals do suffer, in many cases at least. And pigs ARE smart, we just love to eat them. In china they do eat dogs and cats, that goes more against me cause I love them as family members.

My sister is trying to fucking argue with me that they don;t use the whales as a fucking food source. They so do, don;t they? They totally do! Gods. And I need a question answered, how is the Faroe Islands agriculture, if they have any? Like, are they capable of growing anything?
NATIK001 Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2012
They do, but it's argueably pretty stupid of them to do so since the whales are filled with all sorts of nasty heavy metals and other pollutants.

But honestly that's their own problem, if they feel they can eat them then let them poison themselves.
Cyndrome Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
I find it a refreshing view to compare whale killings with mass produced pigs. I have seen how farmers (can) treat piglets going to transport (I know... not all farmers are doing it that way), but kicking the animals to move is just wrong...
ClassicKnuckles Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2012
Whoever wrote that article is obviously both misinformed and uneducated about this. Honestly, i dont like whaling. At all. But the slander of Denmark when its in Faroe, and all this bullshit about "Trying to prove they're mature" its just awful. Im with denmark, but the sooner everyone stops whaling, the better.
