The next comic [link]

I spend the weekend with a pair of girls from the Faroe Islands and we ended up talking about the whale killings and this "article" [link]

It basically gets everything wrong. They don't use hooks, but knifes and axes. It looks bloody, but that's because it's in the sea.

I'm neither for or against it, but I know it will turn into a massive discussion in the comments, so try to keep it civil.

Faroe isn't japan and just because their both killing whales also doesn't make it the same, the faroes are a small collection of islands roughly jalf way between scotland and greenland (Not exact) with a population of 50'000 hunting whales because they have difficulty farming on their land so rely on the sea for food.

Japan is very large agricultraly developed land with a population of 120'000'000 plus people who have created whole industry dedicated to whaling.

the main difference, no one in japan will starve if they stop hunting whales.
According to my research.

Oh god... this is disgusting... *sigh* as much as I like your comics this is honestly disturbing. Yes of course that 'article' has got basically all the facts wrong but people are really screwed up sometimes.

Problem being whale & dolphin meat contains high levels of mercury, tests have shown that those who consume whale meat have gotten mercury poisoning and they usually come with horrific results. Culture or not, I just don't see the logic in killing and eating something that inevitably kills you.

By the way, Denmark isn't the only one who does this, Japan's famous for it. Remember Sea Shepherd and their quest to stop the whalers? And remember the movie 'The Cove' where they slaughter dolphins?

If its part of their culture and they understand and can control the effect the killing has on the ecosystem and as long as they do it as quickly and humanly as possible I don't see a problem. I mean it's not for sport right? they make use of the meat and blubber, so its just a way of life.

And of course the sea is turn red. Those whales are pretty big so they naturally have a lot of blood in them.

If they're not endangered and the killing is done quickly and humanely; have at it I say.
