Viking Couple by humon Viking Couple by humon
For the uncensored version, go here [link]

Some sketches of the Viking couple again.
About the bottom picture: Vikings were oddly enough the cleanest people in Europe at the time. Not only did they wash their entire bodies once a week, they washed their hands and faces every day, which other Europeans thought was incredibly strange. The Vikings had been to the Middle East and had learned cleanness from the people there, though the Middle Easterners still thought they were a tad too dirty. XD

i know there is a chance that you might never read this ,but i gotta say that im a big fan of all of your artwork , but this particular piece realy gives me a certain ... i dont know faith i guess, i mean in a society such as my own (i live in mexico ) it is almost expected from the male figure to be cheating alcholic wife beater for the sake of " thats how a man does it " i dont know if i can get my idea trough but , seeing a couple having both the erotical part of the relationship as well as the afective part makes me feel ... liberated i guess , its kind of hard to explain but i value loyalty towards and from my partner and this work in particular seems to pinpoint that sort of ideal relationship we all could strive for you know anyway im taking enough of your time, thanks for the great work may the gods walk with you.

This is adorable, and actually Ireland was known for the same cleanliness, after the man had finished his work for the day, he would have a bath before dinner; and his wife or children would comb his hair. Then the wife and children would bathe, and having immaculate hair was seen as someone who was doing well, they also had to wash their hands before eating also.

I really like the lady Viking's dress. I've never seen something like that from any of the medieval costume sites I visit. They have Saxon dresses but they are so bland. If I'm gonna be a Viking I want to be a lady in a powerful position, which means fancier outfit!

Thats true. :-3 I read in my schoolbook, a chapter which were written from an Arab (?). He saw how the all the vikings sat by a long table, with a bowl of water. The first viking washed his head and hands, and spitted into the bowl, then the bowl were sent over to the next viking.

Its also said that when first arrived in the middle east, they would wait for the days for the wind to come, so they entre the habours in a awesome way with their full sails blow up. Showoffing.

The Viking age ended around year 1050. Of course, there were still many descendants of Vikings after that, but they didn't go around raiding or pillaging since they were converted to Christianity. The Black Death plague was in the 1300's, so there were no Vikings anymore at that point, but between 50-60% of the population in former Viking nations (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland) died as a result of Black Death, so I guess either the hygiene had lessened at that point or (as is most likely) it didn't matter because they didn't know how the disease spread and therefore made a lot of mistakes like not washing their hands after dealing with the sick.

yea, I can believe that. Many Christians at the same believed a lot of hygienic practices to be unholy. In fact, you will meet a lot of Christians here in the US who still believe that (joke). I guess it was called the dark ages for a reason.

Yeah, I guess so. It makes sense at least. According to some stuff I've read Englishmen were very suspicious of Viking men because the Viking men were so clean and washed all the time, and the English guys thought they washed so often in order to seduce English women. xD I didn't know Christians back then thought hygienic practices were unholy, but it makes sense since the rest of Europe was so dirty at the time and continued to stay dirty until the 1800's.

Lovely work of art, have to admit its amusing to think about vikings washing up, and the folks that wore perfume to avoid bathing called them 'barbarians'. Sheesh.

Heheh, all kidding aside, lovely work, and fun thoughts to be had for certain.

How did viking women clean their outer dress when it has all those beads and metal adornments? Did they have to remove them all to keep the metal from getting rusty?

Not only that, but many Vikings (if memory serves me correctly, of course); were considered savages by the more "Civilized" Norse, English, (and even rare instances of Galls) folk because they shaved. It was considered childish to shave at one point. It was practical to shave off a beard if it was going to get covered in sea ice...
