Went to see the "A Folk Tale" ballet [link] last night and knew exactly what I needed to draw when I got home.
For those who don't know, it's about a young man, Ove, who is to be married to the very temperamental troll-changeling Birte, but is danced insane by the elves before the wedding. He meets the human girl, Hilda, who have been growing up amongst trolls and elves, because as it turns out, she was the human baby Birte was changed for. She ran away when a troll tried to marry her, and after dancing Ove sane again she now move in with her real human family. Birte who has been quite horrible to everyone is thrown out, and meets up with her real troll family. Another young man, Mogens, has been trying to marry her because he wanted her fortune, and when he sees how rich the trolls are he agrees to marry her despite her being a troll.
And this picture: The big bad troll "mother" was played by a man, so in my head he was instead a crossdressing troll father. And the youngest troll "brother" who had fallen in love with Hilda was played by a woman, so in my head it was a hopeless lesbian romance.
And then there's Birte and Mogens' relationship, which doesn't sound like the big love affair, but they looked like they were going to be happy together. Birte was obviously made up to be a dominatrix, always running around with her whip, or a little bell she rang when she wanted people to come running for her. And Mogens was just as kinkey as her and liked her little games, such as when she in the opening scene blindfolded him and tricked him into kissing Ove instead of her. Ove freaked out, while Mogens just gave him a look like, "Oh calm your tits you pansy. I could have done far worse" And in the final scene he gives Birte her bell back to boss people around with. Ah, impure love.
I guess they call it a "very Danish ballet" for a reason.
I absolutely love this picture and this concept, as well as you're take on the story.
However I have just noticed that the father's speak bubble looks like it's coming out of the beetle on his head, and to me that makes it look like the beetle is the grand master mind behind everything.
all hail beetle dad, he makes troll men dress super fab, yo!

It's awesome, either way.
