Loki and Loki by humon Loki and Loki by humon
My site [link]

Considering how popular Marvel Loki is, and how much his fans love to use bits and pieces from Nordic mythology in fanart of him, I'm surprised there's next to nothing with Utgard-Loki.

He's a bit of an odd one. King of the jotuns and with all the exact same powers as Loki, even acting a lot like a trickster. They might have been the same deity in a past long forgotten, but the way the religion developed they've been completely separate characters who's not even related for as long as anyone can remember.

The two Lokis do hang out a lot though and teach each other magic. They occasionally fight, but mainly when gods and jotuns have a falling out.

Pardon my ignorance, but who was Utgard-Loki? I tried looking it up but didn't find anything?

Awesome. XD

Oh hey, I want to learn more about Nordic mythology. Are there any books you'd recommend? It sounds like you know a bit about it. :U All I have right now is wikipedia and... yeah. Not a good place for research!

i had to read this several times to understand what was going on. maybe an indication bigger than the margarita colors to show that the two women are not the same person and a poof or something to show that the women have transformed into their loki selves would help. or at least panels would make this comic more coherent...

Not sure if this counts, it may just be a result of the movie kind of blending the two Lokis, but I thought you might be interested to see it. [link]

Pssssh, Marvel. I loved Loki before I even knew there was a Marvel adaption!

this would make an interesting show, or at least a really good twist to an already interesting one.

Is it wrong that I'm assuming that the blonde bombshell is actually Supernatural's Trickster-Loki-Gabriel in disguise??

I don't know anything about Marvel (and would like to keep it that way) but according to one of my books on norse mythology there is also a Logi, who is the brother of Kari (god/giant of fire) and Aegir (god/giant of the sea) and who was the god/giant of fire. I got the impression that he is not Loki, just someone with a similliar sounding name. You know anything about him?

This is awesome!!! :D I gotta ask, I've been following your DA for a long time and I'm still wondering; how do you know SO many things about mythology?? You are one of the best sources of mythological (and not only) information in my opinion. I mean, I am a mild mythology geek myself, but on the internet the information are often quite vague. Are you studing it (mythology)?

There is a Marvel version of Utgard-Loki, which may explain not using the mythological version... (And not using the Marvel version is explainable by the fact he's kind of boring, relative to regular Loki.)

Why does the lady's drink change colour? XD

Interesting idea :3 even though I don't really know much about any Lokis
QSB123 Featured By Owner May 28, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
There are two women who look the same with differently colored drinks, and those two women, surprised to see each other, change back into their real forms: Loki and Utgard-Loki. That's what is meant by Loki's comment, "We need to stop picking the same form". The different drink colors are to show the two women are identical, not the same person.

This is absolutely lovely! :D

I've been intending to write Utgard-Loki in stories involving Norse mythology (blending them with the Marvel canon, but Norse mythology taking precedence, of course!), but I honestly had NO idea Utgard was like this. Scion, a tabletop RPG which gave me a load of information that I never knew about the mythologies, where he was depicted as a standard pop culture frost giant; big, old, excessively masculine and looking like an old man.

I had NO idea that he was possibly related in mythology as religion evolved; I just assumed that Loki had been a popular name with giants, in-universe. Or that he was so similar... this is a REALLY COOL thing to know!

Thanks a ton for doing this; this was really good for me to read!
